Artist Biography

Sharon Frazier’s artistic sensibility has been strongly influenced by the brilliant coloring and historic architecture of the island of Puerto Rico, where she grew up. The texture of light and depth of shadow she seeks are recorded with pastels on handmade paper; or oil on canvas. She began painting at the age of eight when her father, a landscape architect, showed her how to use professional grade pastels. At age 16 she studied oil color mixing and brushwork with John Korver, who painted in the artistic tradition of the Dutch masters.

Ms. Frazier received her BFA from Louisiana State University. Her studies included classical realist painting at the Scola Delle Bell Arti in Cortona, Italy. In 1987, she was awarded a New York State Foundation for the Arts Grant in Printmaking. She further developed her technique at the Printmaking Workshop under Bob Blackburn and studied painting and life drawing at the Art Students League, in New York City. In 1991, following an exhibit in Paris, the Grand Palais selected her work to be shown at the Salon D’Automne. The same year, the Pastel Society of America recognized her work with an award for her painting, Casa dos Artistas.

Ms. Frazier’s works in oil and pastel have been exhibited in Brazil, France, Japan, Spain and throughout the United States.

This Web site is dedicated to Nancy Elaine Frazier who enthusiastically supported all of my artistic endeavors. She actively encouraged me to always promote my art. Nancy passed away in Baton Rouge literally a few hours before Hurricane Katrina struck Louisiana.

I rushed to Baton Rouge in the midst of the great devastation from this terrible natural disaster. My way of bearing witness is to create. The new premier series of Louisiana paintings is dedicated to my incredible mother.
